My two cents

Passat air drums with Rush VW ad

Here’s one of my favorite current TV commercials: A young businessman, stopped in his VW Passat at a light, succumbs to Rush‘s “Fly by Night” on his car radio and commences playing air drums along with Neil Peart.

The actor has the song down – lost in the experience, he hits the “air cymbals,” runs the drums and even tosses and catches his “drumstick” at the correct moments.

And the topper is the instant blank expression he assumes when he realizes he’s being observed by some local “hipsters” who signal their enthusiastic approval.

Volkwagen has always been behind great TV ads: I can remember one from the ’60′s (the original Beetle days) that showed the side view of a Beetle on a white background going back and forth across the screen, suiting the actions to these voiced-over words: The Volkswagen Beetle. It can go forward, and backwards, fast and slow. Isn’t it wonderful?
