Aside from being taken from their homeland in Africa, most African Americans were enslaved and lived a life of servitude. After African Americans were freed from slavery, they had to face other obstacles such as sharecropping, racism, and discrimination.

In addition to receiving reporters’ annotations on Sheriff Joe Arpaio, subpoenas from the grand jury also tried to identify people who read the New Times stories online pertaining to Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
As a result, Michael and Jim won their case in the United States Court of Appeals for the ninth circuit. Moreover, they won $3.75 million dollars in a settlement. Yet, they decided to use the money to fund other charitable causes.
