The Johnson Amendment was brought to the table back in 1954 by two esteemed leaders of both major parties, Dwight Eisenhower (R) and Lyndon B Johnson (D). The Johnson Amendment was an expansion of the concept that the church and state should be separated at the highest levels of the United States government. Receiving bipartisan support, there was never any reason to expect the Johnson Amendment to ever come under fire. That was, unfortunately, until Donald Trump became President of the United States. Now, desperate to throw a bone to his far right constituency, the Johnson Amendment fights itself at the center of a raucous discussion and a group named End Citizens United might be charged with saving it.
End Citizens United has been a champion for the average American over the past several years. The goal of ECU has been to fight against the influx of dark money, corporate cronies, and amoral lobbyists that flood into Washington every single day trying to purchase their own politicians with bribes and donations. End Citizens United was first introduced in order to help fight back against the awful Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court back in 2010, but PAC President Tiffany Muller has been more than willing to expand their scope in order to take on whatever new challenge is required within the realm of illicit financing.
End Citizens United’s President Tiffany Muller knows that House Republicans are setting sights on the Johnson Amendment because it will help them get even more dark money donations from the tax-exempt religious sector that has, until now, been barred from participating. Muller says, “The House Republican’s tax plan includes the terrible decision to repeal the Johnson Amendment, which can turn churches into tools for secret campaign spending.” A Pew Research poll on the matter found that an overwhelming majority of voters were ‘uncomfortable’ with the idea of the church having a large and broad say in the political matters that the United States government is charged with handling.
Still, despite the best interest of the majority we have seen President Trump let loose on an almost hard to fathom campaign to discredit and destroy one of the moral and legal foundations of our government. Back in May, President Trump signed an executive order that told the IRS to back off persecuting any churches that were found to be breaking the Johnson Amendment law. The IRS is not beholden to Trumps’ executive order, but if his tax plan passes and gets implemented then they will have no choice but to cave to his decision. End Citizens United knows that the United States government cannot survive as a tool for the people if more millionaires get their hands on it and that is why the PAC is fighting so hard to keep the Johnson Amendment alive.
